It sounds like a no-brainer, but the more you think about
it, the more the idea of bonding with you students, in a positive way, makes a
ton of since and many of us fail to do it. We walk in on the first day of
school and have this my way or the highway approach to things and end up
turning off our students from days one. We forget about all the sorry bosses
that we have had throughout our life that were like that, that we wouldn’t work
for and then expect the students to come to school and do exactly what we wouldn’t.
The idea of showing students respect, kindness and FAITH from the get-go sounds
so simple, yet we forget to do it so often. We also forget that it is part of
our job to set them up to succeed, not to fail them to make a point. We as
teachers too often make stupid comments like “I’m not here to be your friend”
or “You don’t have to like me” when if we really want them to succeed and for
them to buy in to what we are trying to do for them, then yeah we do. The idea
is that we need the education process to become a major part of their lives that
they take home with them and that they become invested in because of the bond
they share with their teacher.
My favorite quote from the 2nd grade D6 University was from the TED talk, "Students won't learn from someone they don't like." It's true and it's important for teachers to stop focusing on the classroom as an us versus them situation. You're right. We need to get to know our learners and advocate for them. They need to know that we believe in them and expect nothing but the best from them. It seems basic, but it's a truth we all need to face.
